- Mati Simcox: Shimmering | Space Rock
Mati Simcox: Shimmering Uncover the thoughts of emerging Welsh musician Mati Simcox. By Roman Parry New artist and rising star Mati Simcox unintentionally started her career ahead of schedule on November 26, 2023. She had originally planned and promoted her debut song ‘Shimmering’ to be released on December 1 however she had inadvertently published her song on all streaming platforms a few days too early. Even though it didn't go according to plan, her song has done well so far. At the moment 'Shimmering’ has been played on the BBC Radio Cymru show Cerddoriaeth newydd Cymru with Mirain Iwerydd as well as BBC Radio Cymru 2s Caneuon Cymraeg Newydd show with Lisa Gwilym. Simcox is a young bilingual artist from North Wales who strives to get her music out to the world and make music people will enjoy. With the experience and skills she gained while studying music, she was able to create the song we’ve come to love. ‘Shimmering’ is a bit upbeat which fits the genre however the lyrics aren’t so positive. It focuses on the topic of self-esteem, specifically the poor self-esteem of the young artist herself. While looking at the lyrics of the song it gives a good indication as to what the artist's real thoughts are about herself. An example of this is the line “It’s stupid I’m so confident but I’m still insecure” which is trying to tell us as the listener that she is constantly putting on a mask of persistence and bravery. There are many other lines in the song which have similar meanings. Even with all of that going on behind the scenes, our dear artist is making her way in the music industry and all we can do is support her.
- Half Happy: Say This Twice | Space Rock
Half Happy: Say This Twice 2023 Triskel Award winners single about dysfunctional a relationship is actually based real a situation? By Roman Parry The members of Half Happy met in university due to their shared obsessions with Tame Impala, Foals and Radiohead, and followed bands like Superfood and Wolf Alice. In 2022 they made their way into the Cardiff music scene and immediately got attention from BBC Introducing after they released their single “Runaway Girl” in 2023. Also in 2023, they were awarded the Triskel Award at the Welsh Music Prize. The Triskel Award is an award given to the most promising emerging artists of the year. Their music has soft vocals, tight indie drums, and guitar riffs that border heavy and heavenly. When initially listening to Half Happy’s single Say This Twice it seemed like it was mostly talking about a bunch of nonsense however the closer I listened to it the more I started to see the full picture or what I believe to be the full picture. It seems as though it's talking about possibly a one-sided love or maybe a dysfunctional relationship. The song starts with two people driving on a deserted road and is from a man's perspective. One line in the first verse “no conversation stops the killer in its tracks” gives the impression that there's tension between the two people and that a conversation may spark up an argument. Another line “You want her to care the same way as you” seems self-explanatory, this man feels as though the girl doesn’t care about the relationship as much as he does. The second verse switches to the girl's perspective in a setting we assume is their home. One of the first lines from the second verse is “You’re the dancing queen of come on now what’s wrong”. It seems as though this girl avoids the question where she is asked if something is wrong. The line after that “He left the lights on but there's no one home, one more altercation” indicates that even though the man is physically there he may not be there mentally or emotionally which leads to arguments between the two. This is somewhat backed up by the lines “You take the bins out, look up at the sky. His mind is up there and you wonder why” since it seems his mind is somewhere else in the present moment. The final part of the song is from the perspective of the singer. She says ”I've been where you are, your love's up and down. You do everything and it tastes just as sour”. The singer may be pulling from personal experience and is describing how they do everything they can to fix the relationship but nothing they try is working.

The song covers a heavy topic that not many like to discuss, especially publicly. The fact that Half Happy had the confidence the convey the subject in such an open way was almost impressive and begs the question of if their future material will also contain similar topics or if they’ll decide to take it down a peg.
- The Vamps: Wake Up | Space Rock
The Vamps: Wake Up By Roman Parry After the band originated in 2012, The Vamps- aka Brad Simpson, James Brittain-McVey, Connor Ball, and Tristan Evans- have developed an exceptionally substantial number of fans through their pop rock music. Over the course of a couple of years and the release of several albums and singles their music slowly evolved and has grown into the music we love today. This year the boy's face the fact that they have been a part of the band for just over 10 years but today let us focus on a simpler time. In 2015 The Vamps released their second studio album Wake Up . This album contained a lot of songs which were well-loved by their fanbase. When asking people about what song they remember from that album most would respond with the same answer ‘Wake Up’. Due to this being the most common answer we wanted to look more into the song. When asking them why they remembered that song in particular some responded with "It's the name of the album", but we were more interested in those who told us it was their favourite song. We wanted to pry into why these people favoured this song over the others and we had responses such as "It's the music itself. It's uplifting" or "The lyrics are catchy and fun to sing along to". After listening to the song a few times, we found that the fans of this song were indeed right. It was most definitely uplifting and catchy. When listening to the overall vibe of the song it was reminiscent of bands like One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer, giving off an early 2010s feel. Newer releases such as ‘Seat At The Table’ are much slower, emotive, and mellow compared to their earlier music. If there was a choice between listening to their newer music or having them return to their old style, then the latter would be the most preferred choice.
